Dead and Undead

From the crypts of long dead nobles in the subterranean catacombs to the pauper's graveyards outside the city’s walls, the dead are ever present in Midlam.

Skeletons

It is not only the living you must be wary of in Midlam, for even those long dead can still cause you harm.  On the Deaodag, as Autumn comes to an end, it is said that the borders between life and death become worn, and that it is possible for the dead to return to their long abandoned bodies.  Many a family may hear the knock on their door of a dead relative, and beneath the city, in the stretching catacombs, bones shift in their long sleep...

The Graveyard

From the crypts of long dead nobles in private cemeteries to the vast catacombs beneath the city and the pauper's graveyards outside the city’s walls, the dead have their place, as do the living.  There are those that would disturb such places, in order to retrieve grave goods and other valuables from sarcophagi, catacomb alcoves and graves.  But those that undertake such desecration, take heed, for once the dead are disturbed, they do not easily return to rest...

Mummies

In the Lost Mountains the dwarves have many different burial customs from those great heroes buried in sarcophagi in the depths of the mountains, to the ancient Kings who were interred in lava tubes, that they would become part of the very mountains themselves and the criminals whose bodies were burned atop the mountains so that their souls would be dispersed on the winds, never to return.  For many however, mummification in the frigid environments of the upper reaches of the mountains is the norm, where their bodies become desiccated.  These mummies will rest for an eternity, unless the unwary and unwelcome try to enter the mountains.  The dead do not like to be disturbed, so tread lightly, thieves!
